Cars

HHFC, Vehicles, visits, work, etc.  A general update on a lot of different things.

HHFC

I have a chart, but it's on my desktop PC which is turned off right now so I won't upload it to this diary.  Suffice to say, this week I reached my goal.  I went from 106.7kg (235lbs) to 95kg (209lbs) from December to now.  I remember people here taunting me about how I wouldn't be able to keep it off or how I just dropped a bunch in the first week but would plateau after that, and blah-blah.  Well suck on it.  I not only like my new style of eating, but certain things that were forbidden from my diet now taste bad to me or cause an adverse reaction when I eat them.  So, I see no reason to go back to eating like I was.  Plus, I'm about to begin phase two, which involves going to the gym.

Vehicles

We're having some trouble on the vehicles front.  My 4Runner is in the shop getting the AC fixed.  Fortunately, it is covered by the warranty so I'm paying $50 to have them replace the compressor and a sensor.

My wife's Corolla is also having problems.  It may just need a tune up, but I don't want to mess with it until we get mine back from the shop.  It's been acting like it's going to stall when idling, and as of last night, the AC light started blinking.  Her car is not under any warranty, as it's over 10 years old.  We're not in a position to buy a new one yet, so I'll just have to pay to fix it.

Visitors

My mom is visiting us right now, and my stepdad is arriving tomorrow.  It's going well so far, and on Friday we're going to San Antonio.  It's great having my mom here, we can finally catch up on some of the things we couldn't do (including a night out alone.)

A former co-worker from Atlanta is in town, so I'm going to invite him out tomorrow night along with some friends from work for a happy hour.  If you're in the Houston area and want to go have some beers and smoke a chicha with us, show up at Mary'z Lebanese restaurant tomorrow after work some time.  This is open to anyone, but the clocks and riceowlguy are the only ones I know of in town right now.

Work

Work is very hectic, and my increased responsibilities are almost overwhelming.  We really need more people, but my projects are being delayed which means I can't bring in any consultants yet.

Dentists

We've had some major dental problems with my wife.  It turns out that Texas is one of the easiest places for bad dentists to work without fear of lawsuits or legal repercussions, because the dental board actually takes the side of the dentist.  People on the state dental board who do the investigations also act as "consultants" to the dentists they are investigating, which basically means they are getting paid off.

So, for my wife, she has an operation on Saturday to fix a botched crown (which she should not have needed in the first place), after having a botched root canal fixed.  Next time we need dental care, we're going to Mexico.

United Health

So we got the results of the appeal to them, and it looks like we're going to owe some doctor around $1,500 because someone (whether the insurance company or my wife's OB/GYN) screwed up.  I'm considering refusing to pay anything, and just letting it go to collections.  I already got the house, and our next vehicle won't be a huge loan.

Debt

So after Christmas, the credit card situation was out of control.  As a result, instead of using my bonus to pay off my 4Runner, it will go towards paying off credit cards, as will my tax refund.  :-(

Sofia

So, my daughter got a package yesterday from the son of clock and Stacky.  The enclosed items are greatly appreciated and photos will be taken and posted on HuSi soon.  Until then, here's a recent photograph to tide you all over:

Sofia in a hat

Heroes

I signed up for Netflix and we've been watching Heroes on it since we didn't catch it on TV and heard how good it is.  Well, it is a really good series.  It's no Battlestar Galactica, but it's close.  There are obvious plot-holes, such as why Hiro doesn't use his powers more often when it would be very obviously helpful, both in stopping time and in revering time slightly for do-overs.

Super Mario Galaxy

Unfortunately, I haven't played this in weeks.  It's still one of the best games for the Wii and I hope to play it again soon.

Super Tuesday

I think the results sucked.  Hillary Clinton has virtually no chance of winning a national election, being almost as divisive as Bush.  What also sucks is the fact that she is not ahead in legitimate delegates, but that the super delegates are putting their support behind her.  I understand the logic in creating the super delegate role, but in this case, it is being used to suppress the actual democratic process of picking a presidential candidate.  If Hillary wins because she has more of the super delegates but loses in the number of the normal delegates, I think the Democratic party will be pretty much ruined.  Markos and the people at dailykos like to talk about "crashing the gate", but super delegates present another barrier that will prevent Americans from being a part of the process.

Middle Eastern Internet Cuts

So I saw that the 5th undersea cable to the middle east has been cut in a little over a week now.  You almost never hear about these things being cut, now we're here with five being cut in a short period of time.  This is weird, and I can't come up with any reasons for this other than conspiracy theories.

Anyway, I think this is enough of a diary for now.  If the past is any indication, I'll post another diary in about a month.

Ciao!

Cables by TheophileEscargot (4.00 / 2) #1 Wed Feb 06, 2008 at 04:06:07 PM EST
Nobody seems to know how many cables there are and get cut. This Metafilter commenter reckons 6 or 7 per year.

I can't tell without any numbers, but it could be the birthday paradox. There are a certain number of cables around, and a certain chance of them getting cut. The chance that there will be a cluster of cuts in the same time and place might be very much higher than it seems intuitively.

The individual chance of several cable cuts in a particular place may be very low, but the chance of some place getting a bunch of cable cuts may be very much higher.

It's possible by theboz (2.00 / 0) #4 Wed Feb 06, 2008 at 05:34:26 PM EST
I know that given enough time, things that are improbable become more probable, but it does seem strange that five are cut all at once.  There probably is a boring, logical explanation for it.

I'm sanguine about HRC by georgeha (4.00 / 1) #2 Wed Feb 06, 2008 at 04:12:14 PM EST
I'd prefer Obama, but I do think Hillary is electable, I'd just prefer not to see the rancor her campaign would invoke.

Your daughter is beautiful.

Who would vote for Hillary? by theboz (4.00 / 1) #5 Wed Feb 06, 2008 at 05:35:39 PM EST
If it's Hillary vs. McCain, I really don't see independents or any Republicans voting for her.  They would vote for McCain, grudgingly.  The polls I've seen show that in such a matchup McCain would win.

It were Huckabee or Romney or another Bush I'd vote for HRC.

I'm undecided right now though.

Whoa, WHOA, back up a bit by Rogerborg (4.00 / 2) #3 Wed Feb 06, 2008 at 05:01:24 PM EST
When did you have a kid?  Was planning permission received from the Cabal?  Was the appropriate epaperwork submitted in a timely fashion?

I understand the logic in creating the super delegate role

Indeed, since your President is basically an ersatz monarch, it's only right that the anointment be sanctioned by the Witan.

I didn't have a kid by theboz (4.00 / 1) #6 Wed Feb 06, 2008 at 05:43:37 PM EST
Although, after impregnating my wife, she had a kid last May.  As far as permission is concerned, the cabal is weak, and I am able to do as I wish.  Others are taking advantage of it lately too.  I'm surprised that you haven't gone back and read the thousands of diaries that have been posted in your absence.

Oh, I figured that that when I wasn't here by Rogerborg (4.00 / 1) #8 Wed Feb 06, 2008 at 06:19:55 PM EST
That there were no shadows cast on the cave wall.

And yes, someone certainly did do a good job of impregnating your wife.  I'd add "up the wazoo" but I wouldn't want to veer into oxymoronism.  Hey, did you hear that Romney is secret an oxymoronist?

going to collections by StackyMcRacky (4.00 / 2) #11 Wed Feb 06, 2008 at 08:14:50 PM EST
generally a bad idea.  In Texas, insurance companies look at your credit score before they give you a quote (auto, home, etc).  Also, many employers now look at your credit score before they hire you since they can't get real recommendations from your former employers.

it's all really wrong, but it's the way things work now.  Dings on your credit score are just bad.

You're better off calling the hospital (or doctor's office) and talking it over with them.  Many, MANY times you can negoitate a better price - they'd rather get paid something than nothing.  See if they would lower it if you paid it immediately in cash.  I know people who have had doctor/hospital bills reduced by 2/3 by just calling.  Play the "new baby, money's tight, and you just can't afford that much" card.

Sofia is just adorable.  She's looking more and more like mrsboz.

re: healthy eating.  The other day we ordered pizza, god know's why.  NEVER AGAIN!  we're so used to eating well that any kind of non-"good" food makes us sick, sick, sick.

Pizza by hulver (4.00 / 1) #13 Thu Feb 07, 2008 at 04:25:24 AM EST
Making your own pizza is yummy. Much better than the rubbish you can buy. The dough is really easy, and you pick what goes on top.

A thin base with some pasata (sieved tomatoes), a few slices of mozzarella and a sprinkling of some hard cheese.

Delicious.

But you forgot the anchovies and capers.
Or skip the tomato sauce, make an alfredo sauce, and top it with grilled chicken and slices of field mushroom cooked in garlic butter.

And the very best bit about making your own pizza is you get it hot and oozing cheese straight from the oven.

Drool.

So, soy cheese? by CountSpatula (4.00 / 1) #18 Thu Feb 07, 2008 at 08:38:19 AM EST
You know, no matter how hard they try to make it taste like cheese, it still sucks.  Just saying, man.  You might want to reconsider that 'no-cheese' thing...

You'll need to sit down for this by Rogerborg (2.00 / 0) #19 Thu Feb 07, 2008 at 09:17:33 AM EST
But in the country where the pizza was invented (no, not Mexico), it's often enjoyed... take a deep breath... without any cheese at all.

I'm sorry.  Can you speak?  Are you OK?

But, still, the fact remains that soy cheese is a horridly poor substitute for the real thing.

BTW, my favourite type of pizza is peanut butter and jelly with a shredded mixture of mint leaves and parsley.

yes yes yes by StackyMcRacky (2.00 / 0) #20 Thu Feb 07, 2008 at 09:58:30 AM EST
that's what we usually do.

however, the particular night in question we were feeling totally burnt out and pizza delivery was the only dinner fairy available.

once we get the big freezer (and can free up some space in our kitchen one) I'm going to make some pizzas and freeze them for emergency purposes.

Employers and credit score - why? by houser2112 (2.00 / 0) #17 Thu Feb 07, 2008 at 08:20:16 AM EST
Why do they care, and why are they even allowed to look?  This seems to be just as bad as discriminating in other ways.

[ Parent ]

i'm told by StackyMcRacky (2.00 / 0) #21 Thu Feb 07, 2008 at 10:07:18 AM EST
it's because of all the lawsuits stemming from ex-employers giving negative references.  Now when you call somebody's former employer, all they will tell you is dates of employment, title, and salary.

somebody decided that how a person handles their credit must tell a lot about how they are as an employee, so companies check your credit now.

IMO, it's so wrong.

oy by houser2112 (2.00 / 0) #22 Thu Feb 07, 2008 at 11:03:17 AM EST
So, because new employer can't get an accurate idea of candidate's viability from former employer, they're going to rely on something totally unrelated to job performance.

I suppose there could be a correlation between financial frivolity and poor performance, but a bad credit score could be caused by things not under that person's control just as easily (like health-related reasons).

stall when idling ... AC light by wiredog (2.00 / 0) #16 Thu Feb 07, 2008 at 08:17:46 AM EST
Your alternator is dying. Possibly the voltage regulator, but those are usually built in to the alternator these days anyway. Replace it soonest, before it takes out the battery.

Most auto parts stores will test an alternator and battery for you, and they tend to be easy to r & r.

Hillary Clinton has virtually no chance of winning a national election
Lately I've seen a lot of talk on the rightist blogs about making Huckabee the veep candidate. Which would bring out the left base in droves, and turn off the moderates on both sides. The one combination Hillary can beat easily may be the one she ends up facing.

But George WIll agrees with you about Hillary.

Note that the nominating process is much more open and democratic than it was before the 60's.

Earth First!
